How I Approach Photographing Family Sessions

When it comes to family photography, my goal is simple: to capture your family’s real moments—the laughter, the connections, and the love you share with each other. As a photographer based near Port Perry, Ontario, I know how important it is to feel comfortable and relaxed during your session. That’s why I approach family photography with a mix of candid moments, gentle posing when needed, and lots of movement to make sure your photos feel natural and joyful.

Candid Photography with a Touch of Posing

One of the things I love most about family sessions is capturing those raw, unscripted moments. You know, the spontaneous laughter, the playful interactions, and the loving glances. My style is all about letting you be yourselves—whether that means chasing each other around, sharing a quiet moment, or enjoying some fun conversation. That’s when the magic happens!

At the same time, I know that not everyone feels 100% comfortable in front of the camera. That’s why I’m here to guide you through some light posing when necessary. I’ll direct you with small, natural prompts—like “hold hands” or “lean in close”—but for the most part, I’ll let you enjoy each other’s company and do your thing. I find that this balance of candid moments and light direction creates the most genuine images.

Encouraging Movement and Laughter

I believe the best family photos happen when you’re moving, laughing, and just enjoying the moment. I love to encourage movement during sessions—whether it’s walking, twirling, running, or even just a slow-paced stroll together. These types of actions bring out your family’s energy and create images that feel alive and full of joy. Kids especially love this! Whether they’re spinning in circles or running to mom or dad, these little moments of motion result in photos that capture the true essence of who you are as a family.

And of course, laughter is key! I encourage lots of talking, laughing, and just being yourselves. I’ll step back with my zoom lens and capture all those candid moments while you focus on interacting and having fun with each other. No awkward silences here—just real, heartfelt conversations and giggles that will make your photos feel truly personal.

Keeping Everyone Comfortable in Front of the Camera

It’s totally normal to feel a little nervous or self-conscious in front of the camera, but I’m here to help you feel at ease. My goal is to create an environment where everyone feels relaxed and comfortable, so your photos can reflect the real, unfiltered connection between family members.

I make sure to give everyone time to settle in and adjust to the session, especially if you have little ones. I’ll start by getting to know your family’s vibe—what makes you laugh, what moments are most meaningful to you, and what you want to capture during the session. From there, I’ll guide you through the process, but there’s no pressure to do anything that doesn’t feel right.

Whether it’s a silly joke or a gentle nudge to move into a more relaxed position, I’ll be there to make sure everyone feels comfortable and at ease. The more comfortable you are, the more natural and beautiful your photos will turn out.

Exploring Different Backdrops on My Private Property

One of my favourite things about offering family sessions on my private acreage in Port Perry, Ontario, is the chance to explore different backdrops during our session. I love taking families on a nice scenic walk to discover the variety of natural settings on my property—whether it’s a field of tall grass, a grove of trees, or a peaceful spot by the pond.

This not only allows for a range of beautiful, unique images, but it also gives you a chance to move around and have some fun while we explore. We might even stumble upon a spot that holds special meaning for your family, making the photos even more personal and memorable.

No Awkward Silence—Just Real Conversations

One thing I always make sure of is that there’s no awkward silence during our session. I love to encourage conversation between family members—whether it’s telling jokes, sharing stories, or just chatting about your favourite things. As I step back and use my zoom lens to capture those moments from a distance, it gives you the space to be yourselves without feeling pressured or posed. The more relaxed and natural the conversation, the more authentic the photos will be.

Letting Your Family’s True Personality Shine

Above all, my goal is to make sure your family’s true personality shines through in your photos. Whether it’s capturing a candid moment between siblings, a quiet hug from mom, or a joyful moment of laughter with dad, I want your photos to reflect the love and connection you share. My approach to family photography is all about creating an enjoyable experience that results in timeless images you’ll cherish for years to come.

If you’re ready to book your session, let’s chat! I can’t wait to help capture your family’s special moments in a way that feels natural, relaxed, and full of love.
